How do you color-code family reunion shirts by branch?

Keep one design for the whole family and give each branch its own shirt color— usually one color per child of the founding couple and their families. Share one shirt link; each person picks their branch color at checkout. The group photo looks planned, and relatives can spot their own people across the park.

A real example

One design, four branch colors

This is the same Johnson Family Reunion design — vintage mountains, pines and a lake at sunset, “Atlanta, GA 2026” — on four shirt colors. The artwork was adjusted so the lettering reads on dark shirts and on heather grey. These are sample designs, not a real family’s order.

Why it works

Why big families color-code by branch

  • Find your people. Cousins who have never met can tell which side someone belongs to at a glance.
  • Better group photos. Blocks of color make a photo of 100 people look planned instead of busy.
  • Easy teams. Tug-of-war, trivia and field-day races sort themselves.
  • Still one family. Everyone wears the same design, so the shirts belong together.
  • No extra work. One listing, one link — each person picks their branch color when they order.

Tips

How to pick the colors

  • Assign colors by the founding couple’s children — each child’s family gets one color.
  • Give the elders a classic color like navy or black so they stand out in the middle of the photo.
  • Choose colors that look different from each other in a photo: avoid navy next to black, or white next to heather.
  • Consider a bright “committee” color for the organizers, so relatives know who to ask.
  • Post the plan in the group chat with the shirt link so everyone knows their color before they order.

Branch color questions

How do you color-code family reunion shirts?

Keep one design for everyone and give each branch of the family its own shirt color — usually one color per child of the founding couple, plus their spouses, kids and grandkids. Everyone orders from the same link and picks their branch color at checkout.

How many colors should we use?

One per branch is the simplest rule. If you have more branches than you’d like colors, group smaller branches together or keep one color for the elders and one per branch below them.

Will the same design look good on light and dark shirts?

It can, if it’s designed for it. Artwork made for navy may disappear on white. Tell us your colors and we’ll design a version that reads on all of them — for example with an outline or a two-tone style.

Can relatives still order from one link?

Yes. Every available shirt color is on your listing, so each person just picks the color for their branch when they order. Nobody has to collect colors or sizes.

What if two branches want the same color?

Let the older branch keep it and offer a close neighbor — navy and royal blue, red and cranberry, heather and asphalt all look distinct in photos.
